CSV, abbreviation for comma-separated values, is a file format. It is especially suitable for exchanging data between two different programs. The format is intended for large amounts of uncomplicated data. For example, texts or tables are often saved as CSV files. The content of the file is structured in the form of lines, each of which corresponds to a data record and is separated by a line break. Programs like Excel or Open Office can open this file format or export contents as such. The content can be modified at any time. A disadvantage of the CSV format is that no generally valid standard exists. This can lead to problems when exchanging data, for example. Among other things, various characters such as semicolons, commas, tabs or spaces can be used as separators between the individual data. Especially in the field of accounting or controlling, CSV files are widely used because it is easy to exchange a large amount of data about customers, products or accounts and therefor saves a lot of time.
